Delve Into Downtown L.A.'s Art Scene

Downtown Los Angeles is home to the well-known Fashion District, but did you know it is also a thriving cultural and art center? Recent renovations of classic structures like the Orpheum Theatre, and efforts made by the Business Improvement District, have turned Downtown L.A. into one of the hottest spots in Los Angeles!

In addition to cultural landmarks such as the Music Center, Central Library and Museum of Contemporary Art, Downtown Los Angeles features some unique treats as well. The A+D Architecture and Design Museum (304 S. Broadway) is currently featuring the work of four architects, including the famed Frank Gehry. The Japanese American National Museum (369 E. First St.) exhibits "Flo Oy Wong: Angel Island, Immigration and Family Stories" through March 31. Think neon is neat? Visit the Museum of Neon Art (501 W. Olympic Blvd.), which is just steps from FIDM's campus. They even offer a nighttime tour of various neon landmarks like Musso & Frank's Grill in Hollywood.

Chinatown's Chung King Road has spawned more than 10 art galleries making it a scene for L.A. hipsters. Check out Perfect Exposure Gallery (3513 W. Sixth St.), which is featuring the work of photojournalist Nick Ut. Muse over drawings at Black Dragon Society (961 Chung King Rd.) or visit Goldman/Tevis (932 Chung King Rd.) where there is a group showing on until May. After appreciating art, you can shop for jade jewelry, chow down on dim sum and peruse antiques.

If you really want to familiarize yourself with Downtown, the Conservancy hosts more than a dozen walking tours to Angeleno Heights, Art Deco sites, the Biltmore Hotel, Broadway theaters, City Hall, Little Tokyo, Pershing Square and Union Station.
