Wig-Making 101

Students Make Wigs for FIDM Exhibit
The
art of wig-making...
In preparation for the FIDM Galleries' 10th annual "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design," Visual Merchandising students took part in a wig-making workshop at FIDM's Los Angeles campus. Using photos from the films as inspiration, students constructed wigs out of twisted paper and hot glue. More than 100 wigs have been made by students to adorn the mannequins in the exhibition.
"The
white paper wigs blend well with the white mannequins," said Kevin Jones of
the FIDM Museum
Galleries. "The wigs and faces are not a distraction from the costumes."
The elegant wigs take a few hours to complete, and students build the hairstyle
around a styrofoam head and Juliet cap.
Some of the costumes that wigs were made for came from the films Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, Ocean's Eleven, and The Royal Tenenbaums. In addition to being a great experience, FIDM students are able to see their hard work and creativity on display in a world-renowned exhibition. The perfect addition to a student portfolio!
