Serena Chang

Beautiful Inside

To say Serena Chang was born to be an Interior Designer wouldn’t be much of an exaggeration. “I was really young,” the owner of Serena Interiors recalls when she first became interested in Interior Design. “I always loved for my mom to buy me Feng Shui books!” Now the proud owner of an interiors retail boutique on Los Angeles’ chic Robertson Blvd., Chang thanks FIDM for helping her to realize her dream career.

Why did you choose FIDM for your education?

The requirements are rigid, the students are very competitive, and the Interior Design Program really prepares graduates for the real world. FIDM works hard at maintaining a great reputation for preparing students to become professionals, from the way they dress and present themselves to pulling together a project to the selling point.

What is the most rewarding part of your work?

I love it when people walk into my store and they say, “Wow! Your store is so cozy!” It was a run-down building with small square footage, but we got it done and pulled a look together—from the front of the store all the way to the back, it just has a cozy feel. I also love the customer service aspect. If someone is looking for the impossible, we make it possible. I enjoy helping people decorate with a smaller budget, showing them that there are ways to work around that budget.

What advice would you give to current FIDM Interior Design students?

Nothing is too little to do or learn—from being an unpaid intern to organizing the fabric library to answering phone calls, every bit matters. Remember, you are a professional, gathering your information to show your credibility!
