Julie Heath
Men's Costume Supervisor NBC's "Friends"

From Merchandise Marketing major at FIDM to Men's Costume Supervisor for NBC's "Friends" - Julie Heath shares her journey into the world of fashion.
When Julie Heath first started as a Merchandise Marketing major at FIDM Los Angeles, she had no idea that her degree would lead her to become the Men's Costume Supervisor for one of television's most popular primetime sitcoms, NBC's "Friends".
Julie
has always loved fashion and attended FIDM with the original goal to become
a buyer for a major department store. As Julie explained "FIDM was an
incredible experience and I recommend it to anyone that wants to be a part
of the fashion/entertainment industries." While attending classes, FIDM
assisted her in landing a job as an assistant manager at "The Limited"
and then a job with "Robinsons-May" as an assistant buyer. After
working at "Robinsons-May" Julie realized that being a buyer wasn't
for her and soon after graduation from FIDM, went back into retail management
at "Banana Republic".
While at "Banana Republic", Julie was involved with the implementation of their Studio Services, a service that allowed costume designers to take clothes for approval and pay for what they decide to keep. Connections made through that program helped Julie 'break' into the entertainment industry. Her first costuming job came with "J.C. Penny's" network shopping television show where she was responsible for dressing the models seen during the shows fashion segments.
After "J.C. Penny" cancelled the show, she used her connections
she had made over the years and landed a position as a set costumer for the
television show "Herman's Head" where she was in charge of overseeing
the wardrobe for two actors in the principle cast. Julie was soon promoted
to key costumer for the television shows "Bless This House", "The
John Laroquette Show" and "The Five Mrs. Buchanans". She also
worked on pilots for "Veronica's Closet" and "The Drew Carey
Show".
Today, as Men's Costume Supervisor for "Friends", Julie has many important responsibilities. She works closely with the show's costume designer, Debra McGuire, in planning a wardrobe that will compliment the season's focus. She also shops for all the men's clothes in the "Friends" cast as well as for main and guest actors.
Julie
constantly watches out for clashing patterns and color palettes to ensure
that there is a sense of color harmony on the set. After the wardrobe is chosen
Julie does all the fittings with the actors and then pulls her line together
with the women's line. A final 'rack check'then takes place with the show's
creator, Marta Kaufman.
In Julie's job she utilizes the best department stores, specialty stores and boutiques. She has met many designers, actors and actresses. Julie explained, "I work with amazingly talented and creative people and the show has opened many doors for me." Julie says that everyone on the set of "Friends" is like family and she says her future plan is to stay right where she is.
