Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

Okay, so I heard you say that most fashion schools do look for a portfolio, but what do they really expect out of a high shcool student? It wouldn't be that hard to make a portfolio (cause I'm already working on mine), but what do they want to see? Do they expect perfection, or just a glance at some good ideas?

Thanx, punkchik

Dear punkchik,

When preparing your portfolio for a fashion college, think creativity above all. You want to show your ability to think creatively and to follow through with ideas by presenting finished illustrations of your designs. The emphasis is not on technique, after all you are hoping to attend the college to learn and develop skills, and if you've already perfected your talents, then why bother with college, right? So no, fashion colleges do not expect portfolio perfection, in fact the way you worded it is more the case: they are seeking a glance at a few of your best ideas.

As you work on your portfolio, stay aware of current fashion trends and make predictions about fashion in the near future. This will keep your work current and show your insight into the fashion world. Don=B9t be afraid to let your personality show through your designs. Fashion colleges are evaluating not only your design abilities but also the personality and style of your work. Your best designs will result from staying true to what appeals to and attracts you personally.

Also, a strong color sense will prove invaluable when you are working on your portfolio. Taking art courses like drawing and painting in high school will definitely help you develop that sense. Finally, stay motivated and passionate! Fashion colleges are looking for potential, and by putting your heart into your portfolio, great potential can=B9t help but shine through.

We hope to see your portfolio soon,
