Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

Help! I'm super skinny! My family tells me it'll be a blessing when I am older, but for now, it's a curse! I'm constantly being told by extremely rude people how skinny I am, and how I "must be anorexic." I find it rude, and while I've told them that, the comments don't stop. So in the mean time, are there any clothes that will make a skinny girl, who's 5'1", look a little bigger?

Thanks! Petite Twiggy

Dear Catalog Clueless,

There definitely seems to be a double standard when it comes to discussing someone's weight. People don't hesitate to comment on how thin or skinny someone is, but at the same time, it is taboo to comment on how heavy or obese someone is. Often people don't consider "being too thin" a problem. But as so many small-framed people know, not being able to gain weight is just as much a problem as not being able to lose weight.

Anorexia is a serious condition. Unfortunately our overly image-conscious society contributes to the problem and then too often doesn't take it seriously. A perfect example of this is the recent claim of weight discrimination made by Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart. She has been dogged by untrue anorexia rumors lately just because of her tiny figure.

Embrace your individuality! Not because you are "super-skinny," but because you are you, no matter what your body shape. Who knows what will happen as you get older, you might or might not gain weight. Either way, as long as you stay healthy and active, don't be ashamed of your body; nor should you let others make you feel that way.

When it comes to fashion, you have many clothing options. Since you want to add bulk to your frame, anything with gathers or pleats is perfect. Pleated skirts in large plaid patterns are adorable and will widen your lower silhouette. Horizontal stripes will visually make you look wider, as they draw the eyes from side to side. So avoid vertical stripes, which will make you appear thinner. The same principal applies to colors. Dark colors minimize curves and make you appear thinner, while light colors expand your frame, effecting an illusion of appearing bigger. So go for whites and soft pastels, perfect for the summer!

A great look that is showing up on the runways this year is layering. Layering is perfect for your body shape, and can be used to create a variety of looks. Try layering three different skirts in varying lengths and complementary colors. You can also wear fitted dresses over sheer wide-legged pants to bring attention to the fullness of the pant fabric, making you appear both taller and wider. Coats, jackets, and sweaters can be worn over any outfit to make you look bigger, but avoid huge sizes that you "swim" inside, for this will actually bring attention to your small frame. These are just some basic guidelines to keep in mind while you shop. You can also buy padded undergarments at lingerie stores like Victoria's Secret.

Even though you are choosing clothing that will make you appear bigger, remember not to hide or be embarrassed by your own natural body shape. You are who you are! Be proud of it!
