I have a love for shoes, handbags, and cosmetics. I would really love to pursue a career in these different areas of fashion, so how can I go about doing that?

Dear Angela,

You say that you love shoes, handbags and cosmetics. These things are different, but also similar; they are all part of the world of fashion, and they are items we buy and use every day. At a good fashion school, you learn the fundamentals of design that will translate to any fashion item: clothes, shoes, handbags, hats, eyeglasses, etc. You will have the opportunity to learn about the manufacture and marketing of those items and also of cosmetics, fragrances and more. You'd learn the basics about design, the fashion industry, the fundamentals of color, and all sorts of business concepts. So you see, these areas are really not so different after all! You can easily study aspects of all of them at once until you are sure about what you want to specialize in.
