Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I am currently a pre-medical student and I really enjoy it. The dilemma is that I've always been interested in fashion design and would like to pursue it also. Do you think it's possible to do both, or should I choose one field?
Sincerely, Undecided
Dear Undecided,
Well, you know what they say; "you can have it all, but not all at once!" It definitely seems like medical school, internship, and residency is way more than a full-time job. Unfortunately, I think it will be very hard to have any time for the study of another subject. I've heard that doctors in training don't even get much time to sleep! I just don't think that it's realistic to consider two such divergent careers at the same time. Fashion design, though not as demanding as medicine, is also completely time consuming if you want to learn it thoroughly and practice it well. I don't think the people who develop the best skills do it part-time, certainly not the big name fashion designers; they are completely devoted to their craft. It does take quite a bit less schooling than medicine. You'd be working a lot sooner. One option is to be a fashion designer and keep up with the advances in medicine on the side! While you are pre-med, you still have a chance to take some art and design classes as electives. You could take a semester off and study fashion to see which excites you more. At some point, it's important to choose one main path and remain faithful to that goal to accomplish it. Good luck and remember to always pursue your true passion!
Sincerely, Fashion Girl
