Ask Fashion Girl
Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I'm a sophomore and I'm going to my boyfriend's senior Prom. I know how much this night means to him, and I've done everything to make sure that it will be absolutely perfect. My dress is gorgeous; it's lavender with rhinestone trim and strapless. Here's my problem: my back will be exposed. You see, I have a slight acne problem, but only on my back, and I don't want to feel embarrassed in front of all his friends! What can I do to hide my problem and still show off the dress?

Dear Sasha,
Your dress sounds beautiful! Here are a few ideas for beautifying your back. Your best bet is to wear a wrap that drapes across your arms, shoulders, and back. To find the perfect wrap, check out wedding boutiques and the formal dress departments of stores like Dillard's, Macy's, and Sears. A sheer wrap will allow the outline of the dress to show while "masking" the skin on your back. Wraps come with all sorts of pretty embellishments like fringe, embroidery, and even rhinestones (which will match the trim on your dress). Another wrap option is to take your dress along with you to a fabric store and look at a fabric called tulle. It's a sheer netting made of silk, nylon, or rayon used for wedding veils, crinolines, and tutus. Hold up your dress to the tulles to find the color that complements it best. Buy enough to drape around you (3-4 yards) and voila! Instant elegant wrap, no sewing needed! Another idea is to wear something sheer and fitted over your dress, like a long-sleeve netted top or an open-weave sweater made with metallic threads. How about a fur stole? You can go authentic with a real fur vintage stole or look for a newer faux fur stole. It's very elegant and adds a touch of 1930's glamour. This year's Prom magazines were full of fur trim! The nice thing about a stole is that it will most likely have a closure in the front so you don't have to hold it like a wrap.Do you have long hair? If so, wear it down! Let your hair cover your back. If your hair isn't long enough, think about adding some cool color extensions that hang down over your back.Remember that, in the end, it's all about feeling comfortable and confident. Maybe your back isn't as bad as you think! We all tend to exaggerate our flaws in our own minds. Get an honest opinion from a friend you trust. Good luck and have a wonderful Prom!
