Dear Fashion Girl,
Dear Fashion Girl,
I just finished fashion college and it's time to start job hunting. What should I wear for interviews in the fashion industry? Should I go with skirts, pants, or trendy outfits?
Please help! Samantha
Dear Samantha,
Congratulations on your graduation and welcome to the working world! I recommend a two-piece suit for your job interviews, so that you look as professional as possible. You have your choice of suit ensembles: either a jacket-and-skirt combo or a jacket-and-pants set. Since you are in the fashion industry, it's imperative to find the best suit possible. This is fashion, and your outfit will say a lot about you! Plus, your interviewers will most likely know quality when they see it. Go to the best store you can afford. Try department stores and boutiques. Occasionally you can find great designer labels at discount clothing stores like Ross or Marshall's. It's important that your suit is tailored to fit. If you have a problem finding two pieces you really like, simply team a great jacket with a solid black skirt or pants. A silk blouse worn under the jacket is also a nice touch.
If you are on the creative side of the business, consider choosing an interesting color or print for the suit, such as purple or pinstripes. If you tend more towards the business side of fashion, basic navy blue, gray, or black is fine. You can still make a statement by adding colorful accessories such as a patterned scarf or jewelry. Just be sure that all the colors in your outfit coordinate harmoniously!
When it comes to choosing between a skirt and pants, remember that a skirt worn with tights/pantyhose will come across as more conservative than pants. You will have to decide what each particular company would prefer. If you opt for a skirt, go for tights in the same color range as the skirt. Your shoes, in turn, should be in the same color family as your tights. Mid-calf or knee-length are appropriate skirt lengths.
Looking a bit trendy for interviews is totally acceptable in the fashion industry, especially if it's a creative job. It's good to show that you keep up with fashion trends and have a strong sense of style. On the same note, don't go overboard! Leave that camouflage belt and distressed leather crop top at home.
Good luck and happy shopping!
Sincerely, Fashion Girl
