Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

What is the difference between a Fashion Stylist and a Wardrobe Stylist?

Leigh

Dear Leigh:

I consulted FIDM's Career Planning and Placement Center, who are experts in this sort of thing, and this is what they told me: There is a fine line between the two. Typically a Fashion Stylist might do a celebrity's"look"for a special event, or work on a photo shoot for a magazine spread. She or he would be responsible for gathering together all the clothes and accessories needed for the entire shoot and working with hair and makeup people to coordinate the look of the photos.

A Wardrobe Stylist might do fashion shows or work in show business. In that capacity she or he might work with a specialty department store (like Sak's or Barneys) and their Studio Services department (or other resources) to acquire clothes to create a look for a character.

To be a Wardrobe or a Fashion Stylist, you don't have to be able to draw at all! It's one of the many careers in fashion which don't require any drawing and which we teach at FIDM. The major you would study to launch a career as a Fashion or Wardrobe Stylist is Visual Communications. To investigate this and other fashion careers that don't involve drawing or sewing, go to the Majors section of the FIDM website.

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
