Ask Fashion Girl

Dear Fashion Girl,

Dear Fashion Girl,

I'm 19 years old, 5' tall and really flat-chested. I am so tired of being mistaken for a 14 year old! How I can look my age without looking like I'm trying too hard?

Rachel

Dear Heather:

I can definitely relate to your dilemma--looking fourteen is a bummer when you're just about to say goodbye to your teens. I bet you're totally sick of hearing older people tell you that someday you'll be happy that you look young! I get that you want to look 19, not like an over-made-up 14-year-old. But don't worry, you don't have to resort to wearing skin-tight clothes, stiletto heels, and caked-on foundation to look a little more pulled-together and polished. Just amp up in a few of the following ways to fit in with the college crowd:

  • To look a little more sophisticated without going overboard, get a haircut that is a definite style, such as long layers or a chin-length bob. Consider having highlights put in your hair.
  • Without putting it on with a spatula, wear a touch of makeup, such as lip gloss, mascara, and subtle eye shadow in a neutral shade.
  • Wear noticeable earrings, such as a"drop"style or simple chandeliers.
  • Leave the sneakers for the gym and wear shoes or boots, especially those with a little bit of a heel to them.
  • Wear polish on your finger- and toenails.
  • Dress up a little more by pairing a"shrunken"blazer with jeans and fitted tees, sweaters, and tops.
  • Fit is really important. Choose clothes that aren't baggy and sloppy and meant for exercising or lounging around.

Begin with one or two small changes, such as a haircut or new earrings. Don't try to do everything all at once. Pretty soon you'll have everyone remarking on how grown-up you're looking!

Sincerely, Fashion Girl
