The Crystal Ball Of Pop!

What happens when the celebrity darlings are not the interviewee but instead are the interviewer? This is the case with Interview magazine. Hot names like Reese Witherspoon and Orlando Bloom turn the tables and become the journalist. Whether it is behind the camera lens or with a magazine writers quick eye and ear for what is happening, actors know exactly what questions to ask and how to get the most out of their subject.

Although not as glossy as Vogue or Harpers, Interview is worthy of creating more of a stir in the entertainment and lifestyle circles. Curious fashion spreads with actors as the main subject and inventive uses of camera angles are the norm here. Consider a large black housecat enlarged and superimposed alongside a pip-squeak fashion model peeking out from an itty bitty mouse hole in a fashion piece titled “Squeak if You Love Fashion”, Interview keeps up with the MTV generation by never having a dull moment. Wide pages and straightforward writing make it accessible to young adults and those needing a quick magazine buzz.

The brainchild of Andy Warhol, this magazine remains cooler than the other side of the pillow. Interview strikes a cord with the millennial generation. A sweet and edgy flavored magazine without the fuss or muss of ultra-glam fashion spreads, Interview will satisfy the Hollywood artist in us all without the velvet rope or VIP pass.

Monthly Book Review - October 2004

Title: Elle Style - The 1980s
Author: Francois Baudot – Jean Demachy
Publisher: Filipacchi Publishing
ISBN: 2-85018-702-X
Copyright: 2003
Pages: 190
Price: $26.95

Do you remember what decade is credited with giving us the Swatch Watch? How about the Donna Karan body suit? Or even white Reebok high-tops? If you guessed the 80s you would be correct. As much as this unforgettable decade will always be remembered for the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Los Angeles Summer Olympics, the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and the Reagan Presidency, it will be remembered for its unforgettable clothing as well. The publishers of Elle Magazine will help take you back a couple of decades for a look back at the history of one of the most prolific times in all of international dressing.

Elle recounts some of the designers who came to epitomize the 80s including:

  • Azzedine Alaia
  • Karl Lagerfeld
  • Issey Miyake
  • Christian Lacroix
  • Jean Paul Gaultier
  • Kenzo
  • Claude Montana

Elle Style is beautifully illustrated and relevant whether you were around for the 80s or not. The looks pictured here are well referenced and give an unparalleled retrospective on the decade. Baudot and Demachy tend to focus on French designers, however the examples they use to illustrate the fashion trends of the time are universal. So if you are looking for a trip down “We Love The 80s” memory lane, or looking to see where the retro revival all started from, Elle Style is a perfect choice.
